ServSafe certification training offered

PIQUA — Upper Valley Career Center will offer the food safety program ServSafe developed by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. This program certifies staff and provides an overview of basic sanitation procedures from receiving food at the loading dock to serving customers.

The ServSafe Manager course meets Ohio Level 2 certification requirements and covers the critical principles of food protection management includes classroom training and certification exam. This class is designed for food service managers, directors, chefs, kitchen managers, dieticians, head cooks, line cooks and dietary managers and will be taught by Marie Shaneyfelt, Upper Valley Career Center Culinary instructor. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certification accredited by the American National Standards Institute Conference for Food Protection.

This two-day course will be held at the Upper Valley Career Center, Main Building Culinary Lab at 8811 Career Drive in Piqua on Wednesday and Thursday, April 12 and 13, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost of the class is $175 per person and includes all training material and certification card.

Kindergarten registrations set

• PLEASANT HILL — Newton Elementary School will have kindergarten registration and screening Thursday, April 13 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Call the Elementary office at (937) 676-2002 as soon as possible to schedule a screening time. Every child needs to have an appointment to be screened.

Parents should bring the following documents when they come for registration: child’s birth certificate, Social Security number, immunization records, and custody papers (if applicable) as well as completed registration and transportation forms.

A child must be 5 years old by Aug. 1, 2017, to attend kindergarten this fall. If you have a child or know of a child eligible, please contact Newton Elementary at (937)676-2002. In order to expedite the registration process, we will be sending out registration packets.

• COVINGTON — Covington Elementary will be holding its annual kindergarten registration and screening on April 5-6 from 8-11 a.m. and 12:30-3:30 p.m.

Any child who will be 5 before Aug. 1, 2017, is eligible to attend kindergarten. All parents of kindergarten age children are asked to call the elementary office at 473-2252 for a registration/screening appointment. To register your child(ren), it is necessary for parents to bring their child’s certified birth certificate, record of immunizations, proof of residency, and custodial papers (if applicable).

Mrs. Hayner’s Birthday Tea set

TROY — It is time to make your reservations for this year’s Mrs. Hayner’s Birthday Tea at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center. There are two dates for the tea: Thursday, April 13 and Thursday, April 20. Tea begins at 2 p.m. on both days. The Hayner Center is located at 301 W. Main St., Troy.

Each year staff and volunteers acknowledge Mrs. Hayner for the gift of her home to the community with a tea during her birthday month. The 2017 tea guest speaker is interior designer, Joy Turner-Price. Price will present “BoHo: The new Bohemian Style.”
