Road closed through Friday

NEWTON TOWNSHIP — Rangeline Road will be closed between Sugar Grove-Circle Hill Road and Lauver Road today through Friday for a culvert replacement.

The work will be 300 feet south of Sugar Grove-Circle Hill Road.

West named semifinalist

TROY — Ethan West, a student at Troy High School, has been named a semifinalist in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Only 1 percent of the 1.6 million juniors that take the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) are selected as a semifinalist.

The high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in then competition for 7,500 National Merit scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered in spring 2019.

Evening dessert planned

PIQUA — Listen to and sing along with David Wion on the piano for the YWCA Evening Dessert, “An Evening of Broadway and More,” on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m.

Wion, a graduate of Wittenberg University, holds a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance and a Master of Music in composition. He has been involved with numerous musical and theatrical productions over the years in the greater Dayton area. Wion has also served as director of the West Milton Young Spirits for the past 30 years and is a published composer of both choral and keyboard works. He currently serves as the executive director for the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center.

Reservations for the Evening Dessert must be made by Monday, Sept. 24, by calling the YWCA at 773-6626. Membership is not required. Cost is $5/person for the program and dessert. The YWCA is handicapped-accessible.

Safe driver class set

PIQUA — AARP is offering a Safe Driver Class for “mature” drivers on Thursday, Sept. 27, from 12-4 p.m. at the YWCA Piqua. The class, created and administered through AARP, is focused on improving, educating and equipping senior drivers with skills to be a responsible driver.

According to Beth Royer-DeLong, YWCA program director, the class will include videos, discussions and other class materials. Interested participants are encouraged to register by Sept. 20.

Participants will receive a certificate to present to their car insurance provider for a possible coverage discount. Class fees are available for both AARP ($15) and non-AARP ($20) members. An AARP card is required for the discount. YWCA membership is not required to take this class.
