Johnston to offer fall fun

PIQUA — Johnston Farm and Indian Agency will hold its annual Fall Celebration from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, with boat rides, tours of the homestead and other familiar activities, plus a new feature this year: a paw paw cooking competition.

Johnston Farm will supply paw paws as long as the supply lasts. To enter and get your paw paws, call (937) 773-2522 before Sept. 26. The creations will be judged at 3:30 p.m. at the Johnston home, with prizes for the top three recipes. Watch the website — www.johnstonfarmohio.com — for a variety of paw paw recipes to test your skills.

In addition, there will be three canal boat rides aboard the General Harrison of Piqua, at 12:30, 2:30, and 4 p.m., with some surprises. There also will be various period re-enactors who will recreate an earlier era. Be sure to include a visit to the Historic Indian and Canal Museum.

Regular site admission applies: adult — $9; children — $4; seniors, military and AAA members — $8. Children under 5 are admitted for free, as are Ohio Historical Society and Johnston Farm Friends members.

Senior health fair planned

MIAMI COUNTY — The Miami County YMCA will host a Senior Health Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Miami County YMCA-Robinson Branch in Troy.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be offered and guests will be entered to win a variety of door prizes.

Free screenings will be offered including: BMI, weight, blood pressure, and heart rate. Walgreens will also be joining us for those in need of a flu-shot. Free chair massages will available as well.

The event will also have representatives available to answer questions on insurance plans, Medicare and retirement services.

Event partners include: Covington Care Center, DREAM4Pets, Edward Jones, JuicePlus, Kettering Health Network, New Creation Counseling Center, NovaCare Rehab, Red Cross, StoryPoint, The Miami County Park District, The Miami County Dental Clinic, Upper Valley Medical Center, Walgreens, Wilson Health, Young Living, and more.

Remembrance walk set

MIAMI COUNTY — The Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County 3k/5K Remembrance Walk invites community members to walk in memory or honor of loved ones on Oct. 21, at Duke Park, 1670 Troy-Sidney Road in Troy.

Registration opens at 12:30 p.m. and the walk/run begins at 2 p.m.. The cost for adult participants is $20 until Oct 11. After Oct. 11, the cost is $25 and t-shirts for participants are not guaranteed. Post-walk snacks and door prizes will be available and bottled water will be provided.

All proceeds benefit patient care at the not-for-profit, community-based Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County, serving patients in their homes, in extended care and assisted living facilities and in-patient center located at Upper Valley Medical Center.
