TROY — More and more people are learning how to swim this summer season at the Troy Aquatic Park.
The Troy Aquatic Park has maxed out its swimming lessons in almost every session, according to assistant director Carrie Slater in a report to the recreation board on Wednesday.
“Every class is filled except for one,” Slater said.
Slater said the next session has a waiting list of 30 for swim lessons. Slater said she is working to find one to two more swim instructors to help fill the need for swim lessons.
Slater said “it is a good problem to have” with the number of interested swim students lining up to take lessons at the TAP.
“We are glad to provide this service to the community,” Slater said. “We are doing the best we can, but I will not go over the ratio of what I feel is a good class size, and of course we want the people to have a good experience.”
Slater said 389 season passes haven been sold at TAP, which is slightly ahead of target numbers, despite the less than favorable weather conditions.
Slater also said the TAP’s swim team has 99 members, up from 82 last year.
Troy Aquatic Park staff have added two new events to the park’s calendar.
The TAP will also offer a “Dive-In” movie of “Paddington” on Friday, July 24. The pool will be open to swim from 7:30-9 p.m. with the movie beginning at dusk on the lawn. A Dayton production company will provide the outdoor screen for the event. Admission is $4 for members and $6 for non-members.
The TAP will have several other events at the pool, including the annual Kid’s Triathlon on Sunday, July 19, for the CASA/GAL organization’s annual fundraiser. Slater said the event draws 400-450 children from around the region to participate in the swim, bike and running event. For more information, visit www.miamicountycasa.org.
In August, the TAP will host its first-ever “Splash and Dash” for ages 10 and up at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 9. The event will consist of a 500 yard swim in the pool and conclude with a 5K run on the bike path. Interested parties can register online at www.speedy-feet.com.
