Please donate blood on Nov. 29

To the editor:

Consider Tuesday as your opportunity to pay forward. How? By donating your blood at the Buckeye Blood Drive. Please plan to give from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sidney American Legion located at 1265 N. Fourth Ave. Sponsored by the Shelby County OSU Alumni Club and the Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, this event provides you the chance to help meet a community responsibility. While you are reading this, a local area patient needs blood.

Blood is always needed for treatment of accident victims, cancer patients, hemophiliacs and surgery patients, in fact, about one in seven people entering a hospital needs blood. Since, despite all of our advances in technology, blood cannot be manufactured or harvested, we need YOU.

Never donated before? Not a problem. The friendly staff from the Community Blood Center will help determine whether or not you are eligible. Most people do not know that only 37 percent of our population is eligible to give blood. Unfortunately less than 10 percent donate annually. Traditionally, Shelby Countians do much better but more can be done with your donation.

What if there was not enough donated blood available when you, a loved one or anyone needed it? Because our blood supply comes from caring donors like you, please consider taking a about an hour of your time on Tuesday to donate your precious blood. Encourage friends, family members and co-workers to do the same. Appointments are encouraged and can be made at or by calling 1-800-388-GIVE . Walk in donors are always welcome.

On Tuesday, enjoy OSU Buckeye door prizes provided by the OSU Alumni Club and food and refreshments from the Farm Bureau.

Be healthy and avoid aspirin for 48 hours prior to donating to become a Buckeye Strong Blood donor!

Remember, when you give blood, it gives someone another smile, another hug, another chance. It is the gift of life. What a great way to be generous at the beginning of this holiday season.
