Red Devils knock off Patriots, 2-1

TIPP CITY — Tippecanoe’s girls soccer team faced a tough early-season test in only its second game of the year Wednesday, hosting Carroll.

And the Red Devils (2-0) passed once again, jumping out in front by two goals and holding on from there in a 2-1 victory at Tipp City Park.

Lexi Blair scored the first goal of the game unassisted, then Holly Bernhold gave the Devils a little breathing room with a second unassisted goal. That proved to be big, as the Patriots were able to get on the board and cut the lead to one — but the Tippecanoe defense buckled down and made that goal stand up.

Tippecanoe travels to Northmont Saturday.

Northwestern 2, ME 1

CASSTOWN — Miami East took an early lead Wednesday against visiting Northwestern, but the Warriors were able to rally and outlast the Vikings to hand them a 2-1 defeat.

Emily Holicki put the Vikings up 12 minutes into the game, finishing a cross by Grace McCalister to make it 1-0 Miami East. Northwestern threatened in the first half, but Whitley Gross and Sage Hunley both made non-goalie saves to keep the Vikings up by one at the half.

But 14 minutes into the second half, Northwestern scored on a corner kick to even up the game, and with nine minutes to go the Warriors took the lead for good.

Emma Linn made five saves in goal for the Vikings, and Brynne Snodgrass added another non-goalie save.

“I’m really proud of the girls and the way they played tonight,” Miami East coach Emalie Carson said. “We had five freshmen starting against a very good Northwestern team, and we had a major lineup upheaval to deal with on top of that. Emma faced a very tough situation, something a coach hates to put a player through, but she stepped up and did well tonight.”

Miami East (2-1) travels to Milton-Union Saturday.
