GREENVILLE — Coming into Thursday’s first-ever Miami Valley League head-to-head matchup for the Troy boys golf team, the Trojans were a little nervous — given that host Greenville had beaten them on the same course in an 18-hole invitational the previous week.

But Thursday, the Trojans took care of business, holding off the Green Wave at Turtle Creek to win by five and begin play in the MVL Miami Division with a 181-186 victory.

“We were extremely pleased today,” Troy coach Mark Evilsizor said. “Greenville whipped us in their tournament here last week, so for us to get a win at Turtle Creek against them to start MVL play, this was a good win.”

Ryan Dowling was medalist on the day, leading Troy (1-0, 1-0 MVL Miami) with a 41. Henry Johnston added a 44, Owen Evilsizor shot 46, Tag Bender shot 50, Aaron Colvin shot 53 and Kellen Glover shot 58.

“Ryan played really well, really had his short game working again,” Evilsizor said. “Henry overcame a brutal start to post his best round of the year. And Owen had a tough start, too, but then continued to play well.

“We’ve just got to be able to find a fourth score. It felt like we were in control the whole match, but then we only won by five. These matches are going to be tight, so we’ve got to be able to close better.”

Troy hosts West Carrollton and Chaminade Julienne in a tri on Tuesday.
