TROY — Some of the top athletes and coaches in the Greater Western Ohio Conference North Division were from Troy High School this fall.
In the nine varsity sports that took place this fall, five Trojan athletes were named GWOC North Division Athlete of the Year, while three coaches were named GWOC North Coach of the Year.
The Trojans swept top honors in three sports — volleyball, girls cross country and tennis. In volleyball, senior Lauren Freed was named GWOC North Athletes of the Year, while Michelle Owen was named GWOC North Coach of the Year. In girls cross country, sophomore Morgan Gigandet was named Athlete of the Year, while Kevin Alexander was named Coach of the Year. In tennis, junior Hannah Essick was named Athlete of the Year, while Mark Goldner was named Coach of the Year.
Also, senior Stephen Jones was named GWOC North Athlete of the Year in boys cross country, while senior LeeAnn Black was GWOC North Athlete of the Year in girls golf.
Here’s a look at all the Trojan athletes to earn All-GWOC honors:
Senior defensive lineman Jared Bair, junior linebacker Will Brumfield and senior defensive back Drake McDonagh all were named first-team All-GWOC North.
Senior linebacker Ryan Daum, junior offensive lineman Travis Hall, junior quarterback Hayden Kotwica, senior offensive lineman Chris Linville, senior wide receiver Luke Robinson and junior running back Marc Scordia all were named to the second team.
Troy went 2-8 (1-4 in the GWOC North) this season.
In addition to earning North Athlete of the Year honors, Freed also was named first-team All-GWOC North and All-GWOC, which honors the top players from all three GWOC Divisions (North, South and Central).
Junior Katie Demeo also was named first-team All-GWOC North and All-GWOC for the Trojans. Sophomore Dana Wynkoop joined Freed and Demeo on the All-GWOC North first team.
Sophomore Camryn Moeller and junior Miranda Silcott were named to the North second team.
Troy went 24-1 (5-0 in the GWOC North) this fall, winning both the North the the GWOC Conference Tournament. The Trojans became the first GWOC. team ever to go through an entire season undefeated. Troy was a Division I district runner-up.
Junior Grant Holland was named both All-GWOC and first-team All-GWOC North for the Trojans. Joining him on the North first team was senior Jake Diffenderger Gabbard.
Seniors Alex Williams and J.T. Yenney both were named second-team All-GWOC North, while seniors Johan Trotter and Tristan West earned special mention.
Troy went 12-5 (3-2 in the GWOC North) and finished third in the division.
Senior Sierra Besecker was named both All-GWOC and first-team All-GWOC North. Seniors Bailey Dornbusch and Whitney Webb also were named to the All-GWOC North first team.
Seniors Kelsey Walters and Maddy Innes and juniors Arianna Garcia and Bailey Hess were named to the second team.
Troy went 8-8-2 (3-0-2 in the GWOC North) and finished second in the division.
Boys Cross Country
Jones was named All-GWOC and first-team All-GWOC North. He was joined on the North Division first team by senior Parker Hench and sophomore Andy Smith.
Troy finished second in the North Division and eighth in the GWOC.
Girls Cross Country
Gigandet was named All-GWOC and first-team All-GWOC North. Sophomores Megan Myers and Emma Shigley and freshmen Kate Pence and Olivia Tyre all were named first-team All-GWOC North, as well.
Seniors Rachel Davidson and Haley Huelsman were named to the North second team. Junior Megan Studebaker earned special mention.
The Trojans won the GWOC North, finished second to Centerville in the GWOC and placed fifth at the state meet.
Senior Troy Moore, sophomore Nate Uhlenbrock and freshman Holden Scribner all were named first-team All-GWOC North. Senior Tyler Lambert earned special mention.
Troy went 10-4 (3-1 in the GWOC North) and finished second to Butler in the GWOC North Division. The Trojans finished the season sixth overall in the GWOC.
Black was named both All-GWOC and first-team All-GWOC North Division. All four of the first-team All-GWOC North selections were from Troy, with seniors Ali Helman, Natalie Henson and Hannah Wright joining Black.
Mackenzie Pruitt was named special mention.
Troy went 11-3 (3-0 in the GWOC North), winning the North Division. Troy tied for fourth overall in the GWOC.
Essick was named both All-GWOC and first-team All-GWOC North Division at first singles. The doubles team of seniors Zoey Scancarello and Sierra VerStraten also was named first-team All-GWOC North.
Junior Maggie Hennessy was named second-team All-GWOC North Division at second singles, while junior Ashley Bruns was named to the second team at third singles, as was the second doubles team of junior Meredith Pruitt and freshman Katie Sherrick.
Troy went 14-5 (4-0 in the GWOC North), capturing a GWOC North Division championship.
