WEST CHESTER — After a 16-year absence, the Troy gymnastics team is returning to state.
The Trojans captured a district title Saturday at Lakota East High School, earning them one of two coveted berths to the state team championships Friday at Hilliard Bradley High School. Troy also had a number of individuals qualify for Saturday’s state invidual competition, also at Hilliard Bradley.
The Trojans finished with 139.15 team points, good enough for a district title. Centerville finished in second place with 135.9 points to earn the other team berth at the state meet. Troy also had four individuals qualify for state in several events.
Leading the way for the Trojans were seniors Minori Nakada and Claire Buerger, both of whom qualified for individual competition in the all-around and a pair of individual events. Nakada finished second in the all-around, second on the bars and third on the floor exercise. Buerger finished fourth in the all-around, won a district title on the floor and took fourth on the vault.
Grace Dwyer finished third on the vault, good enough to earn an individual state berth. Abby Baker took fifth place on the beam to earn her trip to state as an individual.
In the all-around, Nakada finished with a 35.35, while Buerger scored a 35.05. Dwyer recorded a 34.375, Elizabeth Deal scored a 33.15 and Baker finished with a 32.725.
On the vault, Dwyer led the Trojans with a 9.0, while Buerger followed closely with an 8.975. Nakada recorded an 8.775, Deal scored an 8.7 and Baker and Miranda Silcott both scored 8.0s.
On the bars, Nakada scored an 8.825. Buerger scored an 8.175, Dwyer finished with an 8.3, Baker scored a 7.625, Silcott scored a 6.95 and Deal scored a 6.9.
On the beam, Baker scored an 8.75, Deal finished with an 8.7, Nakada scored an 8.675, Lanie Hagen and Buerger both scored 8.65 and Dwyer recorded an 8.25.
On the floor exercise, Buerger captured a district championship with a 9.25, while Nakada scored a 9.075. Deal scored an 8.85, Dwyer scored an 8.825, Sayaka Nakada recorded an 8.55 and Baker scored an 8.35.
Tippecanoe, Miami East and Piqua also had individuals competing at the district meet.
For Tippecanoe, Ally Davis scored a 30.375 in the all-around, including a 7.775 on the vault, a 6.85 on the bars, an 8.1 on the beam and a 7.65 on the floor. Brooke Musick scored a 29.05 in the all-around, including a 7.75 on the vault, a 5.5 on the bars, an 8.1 on the beam and a 7.7 on the floor exercise.
Miami East’s Emma Younce scored a 26.9 in the all-around, including a 7.15 on the vault, a 6.2 on the bars, a 6.4 on the beam and a 7.15 on the floor exercise.
Piqua’s Megan Anderson scored a 32.85 in the all-around, including an 8.15 on the vault, a 7.925 on the bars, an 8.4 on the beam and an 8.35 on the floor exercise. Also for the Indians, Xandrea Harrison scored an 8.3 on the bars and a 7.5 on the beam.
