TIPP CITY — Soaring temperatures didn’t seem to discourage record-setting crowds at the 61st annual Mum Festival in Tipp City on Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29.
“It’s going great,” Mum Festival president Mary Thomas said.
“It’s been shoulder-to-shoulder people. We were kind of afraid that the heat would keep people away, but right after the parade it was packed.”
The festival kicked-off on Friday with a car show in downtown Tipp City. Added to the festival approximately 30 years ago, the show has grown steadily and now draws several hundred cars each year.
“Typically, we have between 800 and 900 cars at the car show,” Thomas said.
The festival itself has grown over the years, as well, and this year organizers had to stop accepting new vendors.
“We do have a lot of new vendors, and we are at capacity as far as vendors,” Thomas said.
“We have 23 food vendors,” she said, “and I think it was 260 other vendors, so it was close to 300.”
Many vendors started setting up in the park as early as Thursday or Friday. Longtime vendors Dale and Kee Circle of Circle & Sons Farms traveled from St. Paris, and started setting up at about 10 a.m. on Friday.
“It was like a parade,” Kee Circle said. “Four truckloads of stuff came up here, and then we’ve already brought another truck today and we’ll probably bring another one tomorrow.”
Offering five different sizes and six different colors of mums, along with pumpkins, gourds, squash, corn shocks and honey, Circle & Sons Farms has been coming to the Mum Festival for 28 years now.
“I don’t know if we’re the oldest vendors, but we’ve probably been here the longest,” Circle said.
“It’s fun,” she said. “This is the only festival we do because we farm; we have beans and corn and wheat. We have a farm market off of State Route 55.”
In addition to food and craft vendors, the festival also featured a parade, live music and entertainment at the park, a 5K run and a special Mum Kids Land play area. The theme for this year’s festival was “Mumstock ’19.”
