MIAMI COUNTY —The Piqua man accused of stealing beagle puppies from a residence appeared in Miami County Municipal Court on Thursday.
Matthew King, 20, of Piqua, was released on his own recognizance when he appeared for a preliminary hearing for second degree misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals and fifth degree felony receiving stolen property charges by the Piqua Police Department.
The cruelty to animals charges were dismissed. The case was bound over to the Miami County Common Pleas Court.
On June 3, a Piqua resident who breeds the beagle puppies for hunting, reported all of the puppies missing from the backyard of his home. Shortly after the report, a disturbance call sent police to a home where a female had one of the puppies in her possession.
Police investigated the incident and later found a duffel bag full of the puppies in King’s backyard.
